STEEL WIRE DRAWING PROCESS & APPLICATIONS

Steel wire drawing is a metalworking process that applies pressure. In this process, a steel strip or coil is drawn or pulled through a die or multiple successive dies. Each die has a smaller diameter than the input material, reducing the wire’s cross-sectional area as it passes through each die. As a result, the wire’s cross-section decreases, but its length increases or elongates according to its new diameter.

RAW MATERIALS

The raw material used is hot-rolled wire rod, also known as billets, imported domestically (from suppliers like Hòa Phát, Formosa, Việt Mỹ, etc.) and internationally. Using wire rod as the input material for steel wire drawing requires the material to be soft, typically SAE or CB grade. This raw material is processed directly without the need for cutting or rolling stages. Wire rods ranging from 5.5mm to 10mm in diameter are drawn into wires with diameters from 1mm to 8mm as needed.

TENSILE STRENGTH

The drawn steel wire has a uniform black color and can withstand tensile forces of up to 300–400 N/mm² without breaking. A thin oxide layer adheres to the wire surface, ensuring that it does not warp or peel when bent. The finished drawn steel wire has a shinier surface.

APPLICATIONS OF DRAWN STEEL WIRE

Due to its high tensile strength, drawn steel wire is widely used across various industries, offering excellent safety, durability, and versatility. It is commonly utilized in industrial and agricultural applications, such as welded mesh, fences, cables, springs, nails, binding wire, B30 and B40 mesh. Additionally, it can be used for plant trellises, livestock cages, enclosures, household items, and more.
